hospital “universitari doctor josep trueta”, girona, catalunya (2006) competition with pre-selection – 3rd place.
The smallness of the available plot and the capacity dictated the choice of a vertical solution. Of a height commensurate with the cathedral and with Castell de Montjuic, the new hospital sets a virtual ceiling for the city and becomes its new icon. The use of ‘DNA’ patterns as motifs in the composition of the outer walls introduces an apparent randomness, the human element, and the negation of the hospital building-machine stereotype.
