located in the port of lisbon, the “pedro alvares cabral” building was a cod warehouse and a heritage listed building, now reused to accommodate the large collection of oriental art owned by the fundação oriente. beyond the limitations inherent to the installation of a museum program in an existing building and with very specific characteristics with which they faced from the beginning: a short walk between floors and the lack of openings on the front (dictated by the needs of the original store), responsible for challenges of sharing exhibition area and light entrance. the goal was to combine architectural identity of the building with its new use as a museum, through the reorganisation of its distribution, access and interaction with the public, combining administrative and cultural spaces.
